Rayne Shooting: Jeremy Dugas, 19, and Nicholas Dupuis, 18, were both shot while they were strolling on the 500 block of North Chevis Street on the evening of November 3, 2023, at 8:28 PM. Jeremy Dugas was treated at the nearby hospital for the minor gunshot wound to his buttock that he sustained and was later released from the facility.
Nicholas Dupuis sustained life-threatening injuries and, following the first care he received in his own state, was transported by helicopter to a medical institution located in another state for further specialized treatment.
The primary suspect in this shooting is identified as a 41-year-old man named Darrell Dwayne Dugas. Because Darrell is believed to have been the target of a previous attempted shooting on N. Marie Street, it is possible that the two crimes are connected.
On the heels of the issuance of a warrant for Darrell Dugas’s arrest the previous week, law enforcement agents identified and detained him this morning in Rayne on South LeBlanc Street. It was a peaceful arrest, and he is being held at the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office jail on a bond of $700,000, which was established by Commissioner Andre Doguet.
The charges against him include two counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of criminal conspiracy. The investigation has led to the identification of many conspirators, and it is believed that additional arrests will be made in the near future. Detectives request that anybody who may have information relating to any shooting occurrence call either the 337-393-2930 or the 337-789-TIPS number for Crime Stoppers of Acadia Parish.
