The next head football coach at Mercer will take over for Drew Cronic. The Navy has recruited Cronic to the position of offensive coordinator. Mike Jacobs, a former coach at Lenoir-Rhyne, has joined the ranks of Cronic and Bobby Lamb as head coaches of the Mercer University football program, which has seen a revival since 2013. Mercer University is where Cronic was hired, and Jacobs is a fellow alum.
During his tenure as head coach, Jacobs has an impressive record of 74-17. His winning percentage at Lenoir-Rhyne and Notre Dame College in Ohio is 813 percent. The nation’s active D1 and D2 institutions rank that win % sixth. He made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Playoffs thanks to his 13-2 record.
I want to express my gratitude to the people who have dedicated so much time to the search committee in their pursuit of the ideal candidate to lead our football team. It was a pleasure for Mercer University’s director of athletics, Jim Cole, to collaborate with them. Throughout, we have been vigilant in our search for a leader who can continue our program’s stellar track record while also achieving new heights. Mercer Football’s goal and purpose are shared by Mike Jacobs, and he also thinks that young men will be attracted to play for him as a leader. It is with much delight that I welcome Mike, Lacey, and their boys Knox and Luke to the Mercer Bears family.
In 2018, he was elected national coach of the year by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Prior to that, he had won conference coach of the year three times. Lenoir-Rhyne was taken up by Jacobs from Cronic before the 2020 season. He oversaw a 32-9 record, three division titles, and the 2023 South Atlantic Conference title during his four years at the helm.
Coaches John Cooper and Jim Tressel guided Jacobs as an offensive lineman for Ohio State from 1997 to 2001. “My family and I are humbled to be joining the Mercer University Football family,” Jacobs said. Mercer is among the top schools in the nation in terms of both academics and athletics. We look forward to actively participating in all that Macon and the collegiate community have to offer. Fearless Feet!
